Rice : The history

The Emperor of Japan follows by himself the rice policy

One of the emperor’s tasks in Japan is to give attention to the policies related to rice, its cultivation and following up news of the farmers and solving their problems.

This is considered a tradition followed by many of the senior officials as part of their tasks. The rice farmers- their number is about half a million-and traders in Japan are wealthy and socially and politically prominent. Moreover, they play a significant and influential role in directing the economic policy of the country, the elections as well as the trends of the prime minister. Therefore all the candidates are keen to gain the votes of all these farmers and merchants and satisfy them. Occasionally, the emperor attends the annual harvest festivals as an evidence of the attention he gives to the crop. The word meal in the Japanese language denotes rice that indicates that rice is deeply rooted in culture in Japan.

Rice is cultivated in all entire leveled and unleveled regions. In the mountains, certain basins are prepared for rice cultivation on the mountain foots, heights and on the riversides and valleys in all types of soils. All segments of the population; children, women and men, are involved in the cultivation process. Almost all the population of Vietnam work in agriculture. About 90% of the Japanese prior to world war 2nd, used to work in rice farming despite the fact that rice started to be cultivated in Japan only about 2000 ago when it was brought to it from China and Thailand.
